The research vessel takes its name from the Chief Commander of the Ottoman Navy who was a prestigious captain in the Turkish and World History. The vessel was constructed at the shipyard of Schiffweft Diedrich Oldersum in Western Germany in Summer 1978.
R/V K. Piri Reis is the first research vessel planned for scientific marine studies in Turkey and it is able to perform cruises and marine research for 20 days without entering a harbor.
The vessel is 36 m long, it has a winch, an a-frame, a crane, an air compressor, a CTD system, an echo sounder and satellite connection. Also, it includes a computer and a wet chemistry laboratory. It is able to host 12 vessel staff and 12 academic staff.
