Palynological Research

The analysis of organic-walled micro-fossils or palynomorphs (e.g. terrestrial spores and pollen grains, non-pollen palynomorphs, marine and freshwater algae) is very important in the disciplines of biostratigraphy, geochronology and paleoecology. Especially, past ecosystems, climate, phytogeography, can help greatly in determining the sedimentary origin, for example the correct aging of rock layers. Also palynofacies analysis is also used to determine petroleum reservoir geometries.

Palynological study are carried out under the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics. This study are carried out in terrestrial and marine sedimentary sequences of different geological times. The purpose of palynological study is: 1) to determine correct aging of sediments deposition, 2) to obtain palaeogeographic and paleoecological findings during sample storage according to the defined palinomorphs and 3) to do palaeoclimatic assessments.
